5 Simple Ways to Feel Happier at Home

How do you feel when you step inside your home? Do you feel stressed or at ease?

The way your space is organized, the clutter in your home and the things you have on display all affect you feel. Get an instant mood boost and feel happier at home by making these simple tweaks to your space.

1. Showcase your special memories.

Memories of our experiences make us happier because we’re able to relive the special memories anytime we see a photo or a memento of our special experiences.

If you love travelling, make a travel photo collage or put up a map and mark all of the places you’ve visited. I recently put a few of the fridge magnets my husband and I collected over the years from our travels and I can’t help but smile every time I walk by the fridge.

We all have tons of photos on our phones that we only ever post on social media but make a point of showcasing them in your home instead of that Instastory that doesn’t last beyond 24 hours.

Create a rotating display area in your home to do this, so every time there’s a special holiday print off photos and put them up. Maybe for Halloween print off your kid’s costume photos from years past or for Christmas showcase each year’s Santa photos.

2. Surround yourself with what you love.

Decluttering will profoundly change your life, but you don’t need to get rid of all of the things you love. In fact, being mindful of what we keep is just as important as what we decide to clear out.

I love books and use the library a lot, but I still have quite a few books that I own and I don’t want to get rid of. Sharing my favourite reads with friends and referring to books again from time to time is important to me so I have a small bookcase to showcase my favourite reads.

Think about what you love and feature it your home. As tempting as it is to keep every little thing though, only hold on to what is dearest to you.

3. Create a special place in your home just for you.

You need your special place. A place just for you where you can go to unwind. For me, it’s my home office. I kept it simple and clean so I would feel calm, relaxed and ready to write. Now, I can’t wait to sit down at my desk each day and get down to business.

Think about where you could make a place that’s just your own. Maybe it’s the bathtub where you can put some essential oils with special soaps and scrubs or maybe it’s a toy-free zone like your balcony or master bedroom. Wherever it is, let it be a place that inspires and relaxes you. That means making sure the kid’s stuff doesn’t take over every room. They have their space and you need yours. 4. Design your space with purpose

Think about each room in your home and what you want it be used for. Do you want the living room to be where you have some quiet family time each day? Design it that way.

In our home, we moved the TV into the basement to keep the main living space free from distractions. The living room has a play area for the kids with a comfortable sitting area but nothing else. The simple shift of moving the TV out of our living space cut down our kid’s TV time by 90 percent.

Being purposeful in designing your space means you are creating your home based on your values. What do you want your home to represent for you and for your family? Be clear on your priorities instead of randomly jamming each room with one knick-knack or another or having distractions in the form of screens in the areas you don’t want them.

5. Choose function over form

Your house is not a showroom for guests or anyone else. It’s a space for your family to move freely, to connect and relax, keep it that way by removing anything that gets in the way. Maybe it’s the decorative piece in the hallway the kids keep knocking over, or the extra furniture that makes it hard to move around. As nice as it would be to have our home look like an IKEA showroom, make sure you’re not sacrificing function and ease for it.

Before having kids, I would love displaying things perfectly but now I organize things based on how easy it is to access and use. Maybe things don’t look as nice but my space is much easier to navigate and not to mention less stressful too.

    Yes Sydney! It’s all about how your space makes you feel. Minimalism can definitely help you feel better but that doesn’t mean you have to get rid of everything. I’m excited to read your post!
